Who I am: My name is Amy and I have been a Type 1 Diabetic for 25 years (since I was 5) and was having some serious health issues a few years ago. In fact I nearly died twice. Most people would take the first close call as a sign that things need to change but it was the second episode a month later that really scared me. I contacted an endocrinologist (diabetic specialist) and booked an appointment with a dietitian. I then got a gym membership at the same place as one of my friends who was my motivator. I went from never working out to going to the gym 5 days a week. Last year I started running outside and decided that I needed a goal. By having a goal you stay motivated to continue working out even when it's snowing and cold.
Why I am competing: This summer is a way to prove to myself that I can accomplish anything, regardless if I have diabetes or not. I want to prove to all diabetics that anyone who tells you "you can't because you are diabetic" is WRONG. Diabetes for me simply means that we have to pay attention to our health more than the average person.
Goals: If I receive enough sponsorships I would like to compete in 2 triathlons a month. My first Triathlon was June 3 in Milton. For the future I will continue my training to eventually move up to doing Olympic distances next year and then Ironman distances.
